Jim Davidson used to say that Hairdressers go to college for four years, the first 6 months is spent learning the skills and the remaining 3 and a half years are spent trying to come up with a funny hair dressing related expression for their shop like "hair today" or "Sharon snips" or "Barber-Ran Cutz"

Very good article, really helpful suggestions. I represent Bizwiki, a free to list UK online business directory and we receive numerous submissions from beauty salons. One problem we often have in verifying the submissions is that the company name the salon submits to us is not always the one listed on their website. As many salons are very small and not registered with Companies House it's difficult for us to ascertain the actual trading name of the company which obviously holds up the approval of the submission.

So just a word of advice to go along with the other great tips above: pick a name that you are sure you are happy to use on your website, in print ads and in all of your online ads. Most respectable online directories require your actual registered company name or trading name be used. Bizwiki won't accept a "new" trading name such as "AAAAAAA Absolutely Astounding Salon" just to try to bump your listing up in the rankings. Regardless of what you submit we have to use the actual company/trading name. So choose carefully and then don't forget to submit your salon to Bizwiki - we now power Townpages.com and Accessplace.com so you get 3 for the price of 1
