How to write headlines that sell - copy the experts

Take a walk along the magazine rack at your local newsagents, browse the section for women’s magazines, and what do you see? Lots of pictures and text competing to attract the attention of women with disposable income… and persuade them to part with some of their hard-earned cash.

Sounds familiar? Isn’t that exactly what you’re trying to do when you write your advert for Yellow Pages, or the poster for your salon window, or the ad for your local newspaper, or the leaflet for your next door-drop? All those magazines have highly-paid editors who devote their time to writing the sort of headlines that draw your attention and make you want to read more. You may not be able to compete with that… but you can copy it.

Take a look at the latest Cosmopolitan, for example (August 2008). Could you adapt some of these headlines for your salon or spa’s latest promotion -

“Beat-the-heat Hair - 15 Cool Style Ideas”

“359 Sexy Fashion Finds - Sun-kissed Styles to Flatter Your Body”

“The Real Reasons Men Cheat”

“Everyone’s Wearing… Pretty Bows”

“How to have your best relationship ever!”

“The 8 Pairs of Shoes Every Girl Must Have”

Which magazines do your customers read? Hello, Heat, Cosmo, Marie Claire…? Take a look at their headlines. They are already successfully attracting the kind of woman you want to attract to your business.
