For many salon owners that means that internet marketing is becoming one of the most important parts of their <a title="Essential Salon Owners Marketing Toolkit" href="http://www.beauty-salon-marketing.co.uk/essential-salon-owners-marketing-toolkit/" >salon marketing plan</a>.</p>
<p>Your salon website can become the hub of your marketing activity, you should show your website address clearly in all your salon posters and leaflets. It is available 24/7 for potential customers, and if you combine it with email marketing you have an extremely cost-effective way to get your latest salon promotions and offers to your customers and prospective customers.</p>
<p>But it is not enough just to build a great website, and keep it updated with fresh information and offers. <blockquote><p>This document first began as an effort to help teams within Google, but we thought it&#8217;d be just as useful to webmasters that are new to the topic of search engine optimization and wish to improve their sites&#8217; interaction with both users and search engines. Although this guide won&#8217;t tell you any secrets that&#8217;ll automatically rank your site first for queries in Google (sorry!), following the best practices outlined below will make it easier for search engines to both crawl and index your content.</p>
<p>Search engine optimization is often about making small modifications to parts of your website. When viewed individually, these changes might seem like incremental improvements, but when combined with other optimizations, they could have a noticeable impact on your site&#8217;s user experience and performance in organic search results. You&#8217;re likely already familiar with many of the topics in this guide, because they&#8217;re essential ingredients for any webpage, but you may not be making the most out of them.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve just spent a couple of hours sending emails to all the local golf clubs, day nurseries and independent schools offering a gift voucher for their Christmas Fayres/Raffles/Draws.<br />
Given that of the several hundred pounds worth of gift vouchers I have sold only 3 have been redeemed, I decided that it was worth a gamble. It gets my name into even more local venues (I shall drop off a load of flyers when I drop off the gift voucher) and puts me in a good light in the eyes of the local businesses.<br />
Already I have had one of the clubs ring to take me up on the offer!<br />

You, or your staff, could be on hand offering free makeup and hair styling tips to match the new outfits. Are small businesses like beauty salons, hair salons and spas starting to notice the effects? <a title="Link to Greg Sterling website" href="http://gesterling.wordpress.com/2008/10/12/more-smb-attitudes-data-from-amex/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://gesterling.wordpress.com/2008/10/12/more-smb-attitudes-data-from-amex/');">Greg Sterling reports</a> on a recent survey by American Express of small business owners in the USA that suggests that they are starting to feel the squeeze as the economy slows -</p>
<blockquote><p>There&#8217;s a palpable gloom in these survey findings. And even though the sample was relatively small (n=602) I&#8217;m certain these responses are fairly representative of the mood and experience among US SMBs right now.</p>
<p>In my mind the key findings are:</p>
<p>- More than three-fourths (79%) of respondents are seeing sales decrease<br />
- <strong>More than half (52%) are &#8220;cutting back or delaying marketing initiatives&#8221;</strong><br />
- 62% expect the economy to negatively impact them (44%) or force them out of business entirely (18%)</p></blockquote>
<p>So is it all doom and gloom? Not necessarily.</p>
<ul>
<li>We helped one of our customers organise a Salon Open Day last week, which brought in <strong>more than £20,000 of extra business</strong></li>
<li>We had a phone call from a salon owner who took an idea from an article on this website, printed 50 leaflets from her computer, handed them out in her local shopping area&#8230; and generated <strong>more than £150 of business in a couple of hours</strong></li>

These are systems that allow new or existing customers to book an appointment directly from your salon or spa website, without needing to phone you.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re investigating several options before making a recommendation. One of the main issues is that many salon owners already have a salon software system that manages appointments. We haven&#8217;t yet found an online appointment booking system that integrates well with existing salon software systems.</p>

<p>HourTown is a subscription-based service, based in the USA, starting at $19.95 per month. They also offer a free service, but it would only be useful for an initial test as you can only take 2 bookings a month with the free option. It is not clear whether it is only available to US businesses, or whether all the options would work outside the US (eg. integration with Google and Yahoo! advertising, or the SMS text messaging features).</p>

<p>A couple of news items from Cosmetics-Design Europe quote recent reports that back-up that idea.</p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;Women are not only reluctant to reduce their spending on cosmetics but when their purses come under pressure they are more willing to scrimp and save on food, according to new surveys.</p>
<p>Most recently beauty retail website feelingunique.com asked 1,000 women in the UK about their shopping habits and found that the credit crisis may reveal itself more clearly in cupboards than bathrooms.</p>
<p>Nearly one in three female respondents said they would prefer to eat less than reduce their spending on ‘essential&#8217; beauty items.</p>
<p>&#8230; The results support the findings of a ShopSmart survey of female customers in the US carried out last month.</p>
<p>Polling 1,000 women by telephone the magazine concluded that female shoppers were more likely to opt for cheaper food essentials than give up their chosen cosmetic brands.</p>
<p>While 67 per cent would switch to less expensive brands for eggs and milk, only 30 per cent said they would be willing to turn to cheaper cosmetics.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p><a title="Link to Cosmetics Design Europe" href="http://www.cosmeticsdesign-europe.com/Products-Markets/Beauty-consumers-resist-pressures-to-trade-down" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.cosmeticsdesign-europe.com/Products-Markets/Beauty-consumers-resist-pressures-to-trade-down');">Beauty consumers resist pressures to trade down</a> quotes a US survey showing that the &#8220;Prestige&#8221; end of the personal care product market is still strong, while the &#8220;budget&#8221; end of the market is suffering -</p>
<blockquote><p>There are few signs that consumers are switching to cheaper personal care products despite price rises and economic instability, suggests a US market report from Fitch ratings.</p>
<p>Consumers seem willing to dig ever deeper into their pockets for luxury items while sales of bargain basement products continue to suffer.</p>
<p>Alberto-Culver&#8217;s luxury salon shampoo Nexxus sold briskly in the latest quarter with sales up 13.6 percent but V05, which is aimed at the lower end of the market, was down 5.7 percent, according to Information Resources (IRI) data quoted by Fitch.</p>
<p>The report stated: &#8220;Consumers still appear willing to splurge on prestige items in this space.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
